Just like Paul said, i'm one of those who have followed his ministry for a very long time. Since his days with Integrity Music where I would go to this Christian Music shop in Ghana to pick up his latest tape to the very first time i met Paul was at Pittsburg, PA at leadworship conference. My impression of him was "he communicates the same passion for God and His people just like he does on his recordings."
Like one of those highly inspired by his works, I'm now by God's grace, writing, ministering and also occasionally producing songs to bless the body of Christ and the world.
Paul keep being the amazing worship leader that you're and a great inspiration to the generations!

Re: 5 Practical Ways Michael Farren Gets Musically Inspired | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

Thanks Michael organizing your knowledge into nuggets and sharing them as well. Thank you. Extrapolating the physical expressions described in the words we sing, why do we not prostrate ourselves on the floor as Muslims do? Because that is the physical meaning of the word "worship". Many hands are raised as Pavlovian responses to words like "glory" and "praise", as well as "lift up your hands" - good. But why haven't I seen a congregation bow down, or even genuflex, when the lyrics say "bow down"? I think our cultural conditioning is a huge factor.

"But all this is not to say the Psalms cannot teach us. It is, after all, Scripture. It’s included in the Bible for a reason" and "Moreover, the Psalms show us how to admonish one another in worship. We call one another to worship; we join with a great company of worshippers; we are never alone in worship and prayer". This is an excellent and oft-overlooked insight, and I write many articles on the need for "horizontal" as well as "vertical" congregational singing. There are many Psalms with the overt intention of "teaching" (e.g. Ps 78). But "admonishing" is far, far more than "calling one another to worship". It is the horizontal application of the Word of God to our daily lives. Every good sermon admonishes us. But few songs admonish us. God intends us to sing His word, sing His sermons, into our lives. This is so clearly expressed in Colossians 3:16. Let's have a revolution of congregational singing that "teaches" and "admonishes" "one another" "with all wisdom"!

Re: AAW Podcast #170: Getting to know Greg Sykes | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

You're doing good work, Michael. If the message, melody, etc. does not make you want to sing, then your congregation will not care either. The songs people seem to respond to best when I lead are the ones I can't live without.
The question: I am very hesitant to speak into a microphone when I don't have to. Can you write or recommend an article on introducing songs without just adding obligatory blah, blah, blah? Thanks man!!

Re: 5 Big Reasons That New Song Tanked, Part 1 | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

Great stuff, Jon. I'm coming to it late only after seeing an All About Worship email that mentioned this post. I think you've nailed the major reasons. Two that really have been on my mind lately have to do with the relatability point. It's getting harder and harder to find songs that aren't written with arena worship in mind. Huge choruses, 3 super washy guitars, and a chorus that features so many anthemic unison "whoas" that even Journey is saying please stop. Those songs can sometimes be translated to a smaller (read: anything under 5,000!) room but trying to do them as the huge rock anthems that the recordings are will often leave a congregation in the dust.

Second, your point about less-artistic (my term, not yours) language is a great one. I even totally get your point about trying to find more "masculine" songs, as the guys in the room are often times the ones we have a harder time pulling in. I'd love to know about any you've found.

Again, really on point post. Thanks for it.

Re: 5 Big Reasons That New Song Tanked, Part 1 | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

For me the criteria that enable me to choose 'the right song' are found in Colossians 3:16. Furthermore, I'm glad to hear the emphasis on CONGREGATIONAL SINGING, because this is fading away, replaced by the "audience" listening to the performers on stage worshiping God with songs copied from the latest Artist's Hit Worship Songs. Every Song sung in the worship service ought to be "Biblical" in its Lyrics and "Singable" (by ordinary Joes and Janes in the congregation) in its Music.

Re: What Should A Worship Leader Wear? | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

I really enjoyed this article!

Re: Are You Serious About Songwriting? | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

Thank you for sharing this! The tough part about writing blog posts is that we writers approach a big subject with the limitations of 1000 words, give or take. As a blogger, you understand that.

And with that limitation, a specific angle on the topic needs to be decided on. My goal was to help worship leaders with some practical approaches to new song selection.

Do I believe that our worship song selection needs to done under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Yes. Do I believe our songs need to honor and bless God. Yes. Did I say that specifically?

No.

But in the world of Christian blog post comments, it seems to be the practice to assume that silence equals deficiency.

So, yes, this article swings widely to the practical side. And so I appreciate your thoughts on how we need to select our songs through the prompting of the Holy Spirit and with a view to bless God’s heart. And I agree with you on that.

Then, Kasey, you say this: "The only foundation we should build our repertoire on is this: are these songs an offering that is worthy of the God I worship?"

I think you miss the mark with that word “only." My role as a worship leader isn’t just to sing worship songs to God. My job is to lead and encourage others to worship God. I choose what I believe are songs that are "worthy offerings.” And I also work to find the "worthy offerings" that my congregation can connect with. And out of that connection, they are more free to worship.

And it’s probably worth clarifying that this article deals with songs I’m introducing into our active rotation of worship songs, not specials or ministry songs. These songs are intentionally chosen to be sung corporately, again and again.

So "if only one lady in the congregation seemed to get it” then no, I did *not* fully succeed.

From what I can tell, Kasey, you’re very passionate about what you believe. Thanks for sharing that passion and adding dialogue to this article.

Re: 5 Big Reasons That New Song Tanked, Part 1 | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

There's a part 2...follow the link at the bottom of the post.

Re: 5 Big Reasons That New Song Tanked, Part 1 | All About Worship | Podcasts, Interviews, Music, Resources

There are 2 reasons...
